YCI Country Information

Simien Mountains Ethiopia

YCI Ethiopia was first launched by the Sheraton Addis Ababa in 2005. In nine years of running the programme, the totality of the hotel's graduates have found employment opportunities after finishing their 24 weeks of training.  After pioneering YCI with such a high success rate, the hotel was joined by  the Radisson Blu Addis Ababa in 2013.

SOS Children's Villages Ethiopia has played a pivotal role as local coordinating partner. The non-profit, which also came on board in 2013, identified and recruited disadvantaged youths from within the community to give them the opportunity to participate in the YCI programme in collaboration with the participating hotels.

The Ethiopian economy has steadily developed throughout the last decade. The hospitality industry has been one of Ethiopia’s leading growth generators for the past several years, accounting for 19.5% of the national GDP in 2013. At the same time, the country has to resolve the issue of unemployment, while meeting its development goals. It is important to note that while Ethiopia’s youth represents more than 50% of the country’s population, the amount of the unemployed among them scaled up to almost 25% in 2012.

The Ethiopian Government has prioritised tourism as a driving force for its growth strategy. The country is investing in its vocational education programmes and is planning to make them more attractive to young people. According to national data the amount of registered students in vocational training was 6.5% in 2012. For that matter, the Ministry of Education has designed a strategy that encourages 80% of students who sit for grade 10 examinations to join its Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) programmes.
