In 2007 two Marriott hotels and one IHG property piloted YCI in two Mexican locations, Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta. In 2009 Cancun became the third location in Mexico. World Vision Mexico is an international Christian humanitarian organization that coordinates the initiative locally, including garnering the support of other relevant partners from the public, private and non-profit sectors to provide a range of contributions to enable the effective delivery of different elements of the programme. They are dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. Having started operations in Mexico in 1982, World Vision Mexico are present in 9 states, 303 communities in 25 cities. Their programmes in Mexico have directly impacted over 54 thousands of people to date, including most vulnerable children and young people.

According to the UN International Labour Organization, youth unemployment in Mexico has been steadily on the rise, despite overall unemployment declining. A 2010 survey on a sample of more than 2,000 companies reported that 43% found it difficult to employ young adults due to the lack of vacancies and the skills needed for the labour supply-demand chain. This has resulted in large numbers of young people either taking up positions in the insecure underground economy or to immigrate illegally to the United States.

On the positive side, Mexico’s travel and tourism industry contributed 12.5% to national GDP in 2013. The figure reveals the industry’s opportunities for reducing youth unemployed rates and for national economic development. In fact, the Mexican government has picked up the opportunity and has been setting up specific vocational programmes. According to official data, the rate of those registered in relevant programmes was 15.9% for 2011.
