YCI Country Information
YCI Romania was launched in 2004 at the JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel, presenting a brilliant training opportunity to young participants with limited chances to find a job or to continue in further education. Following two successful training programmes with the invaluable assistance of Leaders Romania, World Learning and Feed the Children, as well as a local orphanage and other contributors, the programme was re-launched in 2011. Two more hotels, the Radisson Blu and the Athenee Palace Hilton joined the initiative then.
World Vision Romania provides in-country coordination support to the initiative, which involves organising the recruitment of participants, arranging extra training sessions, and monitoring and tracking participants progress.
Romania has been one of the EU countries to have been hit the hardest by the current economic crisis. Youth unemployment reached almost 25% in 2013, largely because young people do not have the necessary skills to meet the demands of the labour market.
With a 5.2% contribution to the country’s GDP, the tourism industry can provide substantial opportunities for youth employment as well as facilitate national economic development.
The vocational sector in Romania is quite strong, with over 30% of people registered for training in 2011. The trend is positive, however more investment is needed to ensure these courses offer the skills development that is required by the market.
