Programme Overview

YCI India was launched in June 2012 when The Courtyard by Marriott, the Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai, the Hyatt Regency, the JW Marriott, The Park Navi Mumbai, Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel and The Trident Hotel piloted the programme.

The Kherwadi Social Welfare Association supports YCI as the in-country Coordinating Partner. The Hotel Investment Forum India (HIFI) conference is sponsoring the programme. YCI India also benefits from the support of Accenture and Goldman Sachs who will be delivering pro-bono training in a range of skills including financial literacy and other subjects.

Spotlight on India

In 2012 tourism is the largest service industry in India, with a contribution of 6.4% to the national GDP and provides employment for approximately 39.3 million inhabitants. Indeed, the tourism industry can help alleviate poverty by creating jobs, but India still faces a growing problem with youth unemployment as it is recognised as the country with most unemployable population.

On the ground, a 2011 survey revealed 80% of the young workforce is unemployable due to a gap between core skills or absence of relevant degrees in the educational system that are not identifiable in the labour market.

For 35 young adults in Mumbai 2013 is a year of great expectations. Having successfully completed the six-month Youth Career Initiative programme, they begin a life full of more opportunity and choice. As graduate Rohit Gupta, now employed at the Hyatt Regency hotel puts it, ‘the Youth Career Initiative has opened up a whole new world of opportunities for me.’
